Step by step character creation

1) Decide on the type of character you wish to play. Good characters should be fully rounded.  They need good traits and bad.  They need strength and vulnerability.  You may want to give the a 'dark secret' of some sort - or a particular phobia.  No characters in Farscape are 'well adjusted happy indivuals' - the only Federation you will find in Farscape is that of Blake's 7 - not Star Trek.  But then, when has anyone ever played a 'normal person'?

2) Write up some ideas for background, skills and your character's name and race.  Talk to your GM about it and any special things you want (like Neural Clones, Half Breeds, Experimental subjects, Task-specific Special Agents or having Implants).  And the GM may want you to include specific character hooks to connect you to NPCs and other PCs in the game - or to further the plot at some point.

3) Check your race description.  It lists the standard Attributes, Gifts, Flaws, Abilities and Backgrounds for a normal member of that race.  If you want something outside of these parameters, think up a reason and talk to your GM about it.

4) Using the Five Point Fudge: Character Generation system, work out attributes, skills, gifts and flaws.  Extra points outside fo the FPF system can be used and gained through abilities and backgrounds

  • Skills and attributes are more closely linked in Fudgescape than in the FPF or other Fudge subsystems.  Skills can only be raised to one level higher than their associated attribute.  If a character tries to use a skill they don't have, use the associated attribute at one level lower.
  • Flaws are broken down into race specific and general.  Race specific gifts and flaws should not be chosen unless part of your race, or if specifically mentioned in your chosen background.  Exceptions are always possible - but check with your GM first.
  • Abilities and backgrounds are non-race specific.  However backgrounds are a whole package of good and bad things for a character and can't be separated - although some of them will give choices within the background.  Only one background should be chosen per character.  You may choose as many abilities as you can afford.
  • New gifts, flaws, abilities, skills or backgrounds can be made up with GM approval

5) If you start with money, buy equipment, ships and weapons if necessary.  Note - civilians don't have weapons - this ain't Starwars or the Old West.  However, criminals often do....

6) Fill out the character sheet and you're done!

Attributes

Strength

Strength represents the physical strength of the character. This attribute is used for heavy lifting rolls, and impacts how much damage a character can take (the strength representing the buildup of muscle mass).

Dexterity

Dexterity tells us how quick and agile the character is. Dexterity figures into acrobatic moves and reflexes.

Endurance

Endurance shows how hardy the character is. Endurance also impacts how much damage a character can withstand. Physical stamina rolls for arduous tasks are taken against endurance.

Willpower

Strength of will, psychic stamina, determination and guts.

Perception

Awareness of the environment; raw ability to notice things

Wit

Wit tells us how intelligent and quick-witted the character is.

Charm

Charm represents the character's ability to win friends and influence people. This is a combination of physical attractiveness and charisma, so it is entirely possible to have a good-looking character have a low charm. The other extreme is, of course, Rygel.

High strength characters from the series include D'Argo, Scorpius and Scarrans

Low strength:  Rygel, Chiana.

High dexterity:  Chiana and Sikoozu

Low dexterity: D'Argo, Scarrans

High endurance: Crichton, Stark, Scorpius, Aeryn

Low endurance: Rygel, Jool

High perception: Zhaan, Colartas, Scorpius

Low perception: Crichton

High wit: Crichton, Sikozu, Crais, Scorpius

Low wit: Jool, Stark

High charm: Rygel, Crichton, Chiana

Low charm: Jool, Sikozu
